Orthodontics & Orthopedics

Orthopedics are considered as the initial phase, leading to orthodontics per many dental professionals. For children whose teeth, jaw structure, and facial bones are still maturing, orthopedics are meant to align the teeth to make them more symmetrical. Short-term use of appliances such as retainers or other removable appliances can drastically reduce any need for future orthodontic treatment. Orthopedic treatment is highly efficient in treating both genetic and environmental malocclusions (crowded or crooked teeth) and can prevent children from routinely carrying out detrimental behaviors, like mouth breathing, before they can progress into routine behaviour down the road.

If additional treatments are required, post orthopedics, orthodontic treatment may begin. Orthodontics generally consist of procedures aimed at gradually aligning teeth, utilizing dental braces (bonded to the teeth, or removable clear aligners / invisible braces). Unlike orthopedics, which are usually detachable, orthodontics (regular braces) may stay in place for several months to a few years.
