Distinct from crowns or fillings, dental implants are surgically affixed into the jaw bone, below the gum line, instead of being applied to the actual tooth in order to repair or "patch" the damage. Once an implant has been properly attached and enough time has passed, allowing for healing to occur (over the span of a few months) another appointment will be necessary to affix a colour-matching lab-fabricated tooth to the implant "anchor". Over the next few months, the jaw bone as well as the gums will heal and support the implant.
